A hot water system, obviously, is indispensable in a home, just like an oven or a refrigerator. In time, however, even the best-made hot water system will wear down eventually and will show symptoms of malfunctioning. These symptoms will likely go from bad to worse, so it is key to identify the warning signs of a failing water heater so that you can tell when it is time for a replacement.

While it is very difficult to pinpoint exactly when a water heater needs replacement before it has caused an emergency, there are some signs that you can look out for that can warn you that a replacement should be seriously considered before its too late.

These signs include:

  • A complete or partial loss of hot water supply.
  • A leak in the body of the water heater. This requires immediate replacement.
  • Leakage around plumbing fittings.
  • Excessive corrosion in the body of the heater or at its plumbing connections.
  • A unit that is more than eight years old.

All of these are signs that a replacement will be a better option than a repair if a repair is even possible.

There are parts of a water heater that can be replaced, such as heating elements, the anode rod, the thermostat and various other valves, corrosion can make it very difficult to make these repairs. Corrosion is more of a problem in a water heater because it is subjected to such high water temperatures. If a replacement is made it may leak, which would be a cause for replacing the entire system. So if you are considering a repair, be prepared for the possibility that an entire replacement will be necessary. While a repair may be practical in the short term, you really need to consider whether or not it is a true long-term solution.

Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 8-12 years. If you need a replacement, modern systems are better insulated and more energy efficient, resulting in significant fuel and/or electric costs. Replacement and installation costs vary depending on the size and style of your system, so if you are interested in finding the right water heater for your needs, call the professionals with Approved Comfort at (815) 219-7102.
