Upgrading Your AC Might be the Best Option if You Have a Leak

What does a refrigerant leak mean for your AC? ┬áMany homeowners in the Algonquin area may be unaware of how this sort of hardware problem actually affects their air conditioner. ┬áBut don’t worry – at Approved Comfort, we’re here to help!

One of the most common misconceptions about refrigerant is that if the system is low, you can just add more to replenish it. Unfortunately, though, that’s not how it works.

When your air conditioner loses refrigerant, that means there’s a leak. Air conditioners run on a closed loop system which means that refrigerant doesn’t just diminish over time. So, being low on refrigerant means something is causing your air conditioner to leak.

So, What Can You Do?

If you notice that your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, there are a couple of different paths you can choose to take.

  1. You can call an Approved Comfort technician to come out and repair the leak. When we arrive, we’ll inspect the system fully to get a good understanding of the situation and to properly ensure that you do, in fact, have a leak. We will then repair it and replenish the refrigerant. Once that’s done, it’s highly suggested that you set up a maintenance visit for later in the season. Regular AC tune ups not only check in on all parts of the system, but it also helps to avoid leaks in the future by catching any potential problems early on.
  2. Or, you can upgrade your current air conditioning system to one that supports R-410A. R-410A is a type of refrigerant that contains only flourine and is much more environmentally friendly – and cost effective – than R-22. By upgrading your AC to one that supports this type of refrigerant, you will enjoy a quieter and reliable system while also saving money! If you have an older system that uses R-22 refrigerant, having to replenish it will cost you big bucks as it’s starting to be phased out.

Whether or not you can afford to upgrade your air conditioner, it’s still important to call an Approved Comfort expert. You don’t want to leave that refrigerant leak unattended to and end up with an system that won’t function when you need it most.
