If your Prospect Heights air conditioner thermostat is not holding its temperature, you could simply have a thermostat with the following issues:

  • Thermostat not Calibrated: If a thermostat is not properly calibrated, that means it does not properly sense the surrounding air temperature. As a result, it will not cycle your AC system on and off correctly. If your thermostat is calibrated correctly, it would be within about one degree of actual room temperature. However, it is not at all uncommon for air conditioning units to be at least five to eight degrees out of calibration. Older thermostats use mercury, and even after being calibrated can soon lose that calibration. You may want to consider a digital thermostat; not only does it never lose calibration, it has programmable features that can save you as much as 30 percent in energy costs.
  • Defective Thermostat: If you already have a programmable thermostat but it is not maintaining its settings, then you may need to consider a replacement, because it is not worth the hassle of continually having to program it. This is an especially annoying problem if your neighborhood suffers power outages with any sort of regularity. If you replace it with a model that has a battery backup, you will not have to worry about re-programming the device. Sometimes a thermostat will have a problem with voltage supply or a terminal block. This will require a great deal of experience and special tools to remedy. Always call an air conditioning professional if you have any sort of AC problems that are not routine.
